Turkey City parties: 2005, 2006, 2009
Turkey City is a science fiction writing workshop where people gather and critique each others' stories (which they have read in advance). Traditionally it's followed by a party in the evening, where the writers, according to Bruce Sterling, try to repair their damaged relationships with booze. The workshop and the party used to be at Bruce Sterling's house before Sterling left for California two years ago, and since then Lawrence (http://home.austin.rr.com/lperson), a science fiction writer who lives in Austin, continues the tradition. The party is open to not just the workshop participants but also Lawrence's diverse friends and acquaintances, such as myself.
The July 23rd, 2005 Turkey City had Ted Chiang as a star guest. Ted Chiang, describes himself as "occasional writer" and has only one book out, a story collection "Stories Of Your Life And Others" -- but wow, what stories! They have won two Nebulas and one Hugo. No wonder: the stories are truly brilliant. It is amazing how he takes concepts from several different areas of science, intertwines them in unexpected but very elegant ways, and shows the philosophical impact of certain scientific ideas.
The star guest at the March 18, 2006 workshop was Bruce Sterling, but he came down with a flu or something earlier in the day and did not come back for the party, so he is not in the pictures.
Bruce Sterling was again the star guest at the October 2009 and July 2012 workshops, the ones I participated in (and not just came to the party).
The special guest at the September 30th, 2006 workshop was Jeff Vandermeer.
