R, E, and Ray in a breezeway of the roadside cafe Vėjukai, where we stopped on the road from Palanga to Vilnius. They are eating the traditional Lithuanian donuts ("spurgos") that differ from American donuts in that they are ball-shaped and made of cheese-based dough, with crispy-fried exterior. To my surprise and disappointment, I could no longer find this once-ubiquitous street food in Lithuanian stores and food stands. Their popularity has been usurped by American-style donut holes and waffles-on-a-stick. Stumbling upon them in the Vėjukai cafe, I bought them to give my kids a taste of authentic Soviet Lithuanian childhood. Unfortunately, the donuts were cold, so the kids missed out on the bliss of a still-hot donut from a street vendor's cart.
