Album: Tofu and other pies (Thanksgiving of 2005)
Having nothing better to do on Thanksgiving day, I baked an "experimental" tofu pie, as well as a "normal" ricotta-apple pie.

Album: Other food items I have cooked and liked
I am not much of a cook, so every time I manage to follow a recipe and concoct something that tastes decent, I like to document it so as not to forget how I did it. If not, I want to document it anyway, to know what not to do next time.

CIMG4975 Cactus Salad at Casa Champala
Cactus Salad at Casa Champala, a Mexican restaurant in Austin, TX. I was curious what a cactus tastes like, so I ordered the salad, and was a bit disappointed to see that its main ingredient was beans :-) It's tasty, just not very special as I naively exp

CIMG4977 Campechana at Casa Champala
At Casa Champala I also ordered Campechana. It was a seafood lover's paradise. It comes in a humongous goblet filled with broth, and tons and tons of shrimp and squid. The broth tastes a little like miso soup, only spicy. Interestingly spicy.

CIMG5119 Krispy Kreme whole wheat donut banner
I guess this is an example of greenwashing -- a marketing trend of insinuating that a particular product is healthy, or good for the environment -- in other words, "green". Even when common sense should tell you it's anything but. Like donuts.

CIMG5122 Krispy Kreme Whole Wheat donut
It tasted just like a regular donut. That's great -- that will give people an incentive to eat more of it, because whole wheat must be good for you, no? :-)

CIMG0009 Pickle pie
A pickle pie Sofia (the hostess of Odd Friday) made for her husband David on his birthday. Yes, that's pickles as in pickled cucumbers. It tastes much better than you might think!

CIMG8040 Mochi
We neglected to leave spaces of at least 1" between the squares of mochi before baking it. The instructions say mochi puffs up, but I didn't expect it to puff up this much and become a jumbled puffy mess. But I don't suppose it explains all the other

Image031 Organic water at HEB in Austin, Texas
An HEB store in Northwest Austin now carries organic water, as this aisle sign suggests. I can't wait until they start selling free range and shade-grown water as well. :-)

IMAGE_084 Mo's Bacon bar
Bacon-flavored chocolate? Surely a sign of apocalypse. :-) It's not disgusting, but neither it is true, as it says on the box, that everything is better with bacon. It's just an "umm, okay" kind of taste.

Not quite apocalyptic food: curry-flavored chocolate. Curry and milk chocolate play quite well together.
