On September 26, 2015, members and friends of the Atheist Community of Austin went on an annual cruise on Town Lake, and watched the bats emerge at dusk from the Congress Avenue bridge. The cruise was preceded by a lecture by Heina Dadabhoy. It focused on harmful stereotypes that Westerners, even progressive ones, hold about Islamic women -- for example, their supposed powerlessness, submissiveness, or lack of agency, and about how freethinkers need to work together with progressive Muslims, instead of dismissing them.
The bats were not very spectacular this year; unlike all the previous years, we didn't see a stream of them shooting into the sky. We saw the bats darting in and out from under the bridge, but for whatever reason they didn't venture out to hunt further afield.
