IMG_4681 P. Z. Myers' signing
Jeff Dee and Manda (center), and other people line up for P. Z. Myers' autograph at his book signing. The signing happened after P. Z. Myers' lecture on bat evolution.
On September 28, 2013, the members of Atheist Community of Austin, as well as quite a few guests out of town, went on a cruise on Town Lake, and watched the bats emerge at dusk from the Congress Avenue bridge. The pre-cruise lecture was given by our very special guest P. Z. Myers, who spoke about the evolution of the bats. Dave Silverman from American Atheists was also there, as well as a few notable atheists from Dallas and other places.
P. Z. Myers' lecture on bat evolution was rather technical (for a public lecture). I remember only the part where he compared forelimb bud in a bat embryo with the same bud in mouse embryo. At the beginning, the limb buds in both embryos look the same, but very early in the development some gene triggers the bat forelimb to grow much bigger. That's all I got from the lecture. Maybe that wasn't so bad, considering that there wasn't going to be a test at the end. :-)
