Geek Austin party, 04/07/2007
Geek Austin party took place at the Triumph Cafe in Austin. Despite an unseasonably nasty weather (sleet in Austin in April???) there were more people there than I expected to be, though not as many as usual, according to LinearB. Anyway, I met some interesting people, discovered that I already "knew" some of them from their LiveJournals, put some names and faces together, heard about white-knuckled thrills of driving in New Zealand (on the "wrong" side of the road), dangerous critters that lurk in exotic parts of the world where some of the Austin geeks would like to travel to if death wasn't too high a price to pay for it :-) , and was told, to my relief, that Burning Flipside does not have "involvement police" that would ban me for being an observer rather than an active participant. :-) And what about the "Geek" component in Geek Austin? Ah yes, there was some of that too. Nugget showed off his website that tracks all the flights that are over the US at any time. Nifty.
At some point the waiters brought out complimentary servings of springrolls to everybody. At least I thought they were complimentary, because I sure haven't ordered one, and judging from the puzzled looks on other people's faces, they haven't either. It's too bad that the springrolls were served after most people had eaten. All those wonderful shrimpies, so tantalizingly peeking from under translucent springroll skin, went to waste! :-)
Given the audience, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised that I know more people's LiveJournal IDs than their real names.
