Face casting

Mykel did a cast of my face, as she wanted to practice face-casting on somebody. It involves covering a person's face with alginate (a gooey material that captures the shape of your facial features to a tiniest detail), and putting plaster on top of it, so that the mask would solidify. Then I took the mask off, and Mykel filled it with water putty. When the water putty hardened, she took it out of the alginate / plaster mask, and voila -- there was a sculpture bearing resemblance to my face. (Not that it's necessarily a good thing. :-))

As I said, alginate captures every tiniest detail of your skin -- even the finest wrinkles, pores and zits. It is a bit scary to see your flaws in all their 3-dimensional glory. :-)

Mykel and Paul use face casts to make masks by way of vacuum-forming. Some of the masks Paul has made are shown in my New Year's Eve 2006 photo gallery: http://gallery.geekitude.com/v/2006/newYearsEve/. But that's a different technology and a different story.

CIMG4992 Cardboard frame with a face-shaped hole for face casting

Mykel prepared a cardboard frame with a face-shaped hole in it. Then she made the hole fit snugly around my face by putting weatherstripping around its sides.

The snug fit of the frame around my face probably helped to prevent alginate from running off onto my hair and neck.

CIMG5001 Conditioner on my face, straws up my nose

Face casting: This white stuff on my face is conditioner that Mykel has put there to keep alginate from sticking to my hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. The straws are in my nose so that I could breathe when Mykel covers my face with alginate and then plaster

CIMG5006 Mykel starts putting alginate on my face

Paul and Mykel warned me to keep a pleasant expression of face as they put alginate on my face, because if you wrinkle your forehead or scrunch your eyes, it will all be reflected in your mask. But keeping relaxed is hard than you think.

CIMG5032 Me covered in alginate

Face casting: my face is now completely covered in alginate. I must say, having your eyes and mouth glued shut induces a bit of a claustrophobic feeling in you. But not so bad as to not be able to get through it. With more practice it may get easier.

This thing protruding from my mouth is a piece of corrugated cardboard that allows me to breathe through my mouth during the process. However, it kind of ruined the cast: it was way to big to allow my cast to approximate a natural facial expression.

Mykel applies plaster to my face (on top of alginate, that is). The more plaster is applied, the heavier the mask feels, and it shuts the light out completely, so made the claustrophobic feeling in me grow more intense.
