My sister's visit, December 2005

My sister Marta and her boyfriend Pasha are currently in the US on vacation, and they are spending a few days in Austin. Then they will be heading to California where Pasha has an older friend (of my parents' generation, AFAIK) who he met when he studied in the US a few years ago, IIRC. (I have to substitute lots of acronyms for my crappy memory. :-)) In Austin they are staying with this friend's daughter, Jodi, who is about Marta's age (29) and a graduate student in the English department at UT. On Monday they'll set out on a long drive to California with Jodi.

Thursday (December 15th) we went out with them and Jodi to Curra's Grill. Had to feed Marta and Pasha "real" Mexican food. And introduce them to such keep-Austin-weirdnesses as avocado margarita. Pasha actually thought it was very tasty.

On Saturday we went on a Duck Tour. Duck Tours of Austin is quite a fun thing. Not so much because of various buildings and things you are shown, as because of the amusing factoids you get to hear. The passengers are given whistles in the shape of a duck bill and the tour guide tells you when to blow it at the passers-by. The whistle produces quacking noises. The tour bus is an amphibious vehicle. At some point it gets into the water and "sails" around the lake for a little while. The tour guide points out various rich and famous people's houses around Lake Austin.

At Curra's Erika got to sit in a high chair for the first time. She was quite a little adult, sitting there listening politely to the conversation... for about 15 minutes.

AAA001 Marta and Pasha get acquainted with an armadillo

Marta's unlikely wish has come true! She wanted to see a live armadillo (as opposed to one of the roadkills that litter Texas highways), and she saw one while driving along Texas hill country!
